A Life Well Lived

Dr. Jai Goel’s life spans nearly a century of change, progress, and remarkable personal journey.

Born in India, he pursued a career in medicine that would ultimately take him across the world. After moving to Canada, he established himself as an ophthalmologist in Cambridge (formerly Galt), Ontario in the 1960s, where he practiced for decades. His work focused on helping patients preserve and restore sight.  He improved the lives of countless individuals—something he approached with precision, discipline, and deep care.

He was part of a generation that didn’t just adapt to change—they built through it. Together with Dr. Shashi Goel, a partnership based on education, clinical excellence and family carried on for a half a century.

Jai believes in routines, and he kept them. During his working years, that often meant the same lunch each day: a grilled cheese sandwich, no variations required. But within that structure was a quieter side—one that family and close friends know well.

He tells stories. He observes more than he speaks. And when he does speak, there’s often a subtle humor tucked in. Who doesn't remember "Toasted Non-Toasted."  The most familiar of refrains from every family barbecue.  So simple, yet a question that echos through the ages, and forces us all to look deep within ourselves.

He enjoys the things that matter—family, good Indian food, and, if available, pie or cookies (preferably both).  And ice cream?  Yes, please!

Over the years, his journey took him from India to Canada, then to Texas, and ultimately to Rochester, New York—each chapter adding to a life defined by hard work, adaptability, and quiet strength.

But beyond all of that, his greatest legacy is the people around him.

Reaching 100 years is a rare milestone.

Reaching it with a life this full—of purpose, family, and enduring impact—is something truly worth celebrating.  This weekend is not just about marking time—it’s about honoring a life lived with intention, consistency, and just the right amount of understated humor.
